The National Discography

We are inching ever-closer to mounting the National Discography (ND). Simply put the ND will be an online version of our cataloging here at the ARChive. We'll start with 300,000 sound recordings that we own, plus data supplied by manufacturers and distributors. All data will be available on one page. That means no unnecessary clicking, no data gathering on you, no codes to learn, no advertisements, no first name last nonsense and no other pages to view to get the info you want.

Unlike most other vast online databases, the ND will include info on out-of-print material and LPs as well as CDs. Eventually we’ll add our 7" cataloging. More importantly, all basic data (artist, title, record label, record company, manufacturer number, format, date of release and our cataloging reference number) will be visible on ONE LINE. You’ll be able to search and sort by any field, or combinations of fields. With a little luck there will also be a find/sort by genre and a way to outfox those hard-to-spell searches.

The ND will bring clarity and simplicity to a process that until now has been messy and time consuming on all existing commercial and library sites. And it will look swell, thanks to Scott Stowell at Open . Brewster Kahle, a champion of open systems and free access has generously donated server space capable of handling millions of hits per hour.

Our humble objective? That the National Discography will be the authoritative resource for the recording industry, music fans, libraries, scholars, publishers, retailers and journalists -- not just the first place to go for accurate information, but the ONLY place.
