Brazilian Record and Book Stores

With the exchange rate nearly as exhilarating as the music, I did some serious vinyl huntin’ and book buyin’ in Rio. There are modern CD and bookstores everywhere in Brazil, but the stock tends to be regional. CDs are currently about the same price as in the States, as the currency realignment reduced the normal price by half. LPs were an incredible deal, averaging about 10 RL. ($6.60) for things that are extremely difficult to find in America, about three buck for most everything else. I tried to buy used LPs in Salvador, but the street vendors seemed to have washed them in sea water, or something that left visible scub marks on the surface.

Here’s a list of some of the stores I loved:

Toca do Vinicius
Rua Vinicius de Moraes 12, Ipanema, Rio.
This book and record emporium is located in the picturesque Ipanema section of the city. Set up by one of the authors of Brazil’s biggest hit, "The Girl from Ipanema" on a street bearing his name, near the bar bearing his name, near the bar where they first saw the girl, the shop is a delight specializing in bossa material.

Emporio Musical
163 Rua Sete de Setembro, Centro, Rio.
9-17, 8-12 Sat and closed Sunday
An LP treasure trove along the main pedestrian walkway in the center of the city. I went back twice.

Livraria Antiquário
207 Rua Sete de Setembro, Centro, Rio
Used books. I found stacks of English language paperbacks for the 40s, 50s & 60. Here’s the kicker - buy 10 ($2.65) and get 15 free! My best find was the 1941, G-String Murders, by Gypsy Rose Lee.

Nova Livraria Leonardo da Vinci
185 Avenida Rio Branco, inside the Edificio Marquês do Herval, Centro, Rio
tel: 533-2859, 533-2237 fax: 55 (0) 21 533-1277

What amazes, is that here in Brazil, at this great store, there is a wider selection of music books in English than most bookstore in the US. The knowledgeable and very friendly staff will help you order just about anything you want.

Motodisco
Rua Rodrigo Silva
On the second floor and very near the Nova bookstore, this is another good place for LPs.

...and don't forget:
Museu da Imagem e do Som
Praça Rui Barbosa #1, near the Palace of Justice. Tel : 262-0309
Almost impossible to find, for just under 40 years this museum has preserved the lively arts cultural history of (primarily) Rio State. They house many specialty collections, like that of Jacob do Bandolim, 40,000 discs from Radio Nacional, and a major collection of interviews (ongoing) with musicians. Ongoing shows and you can arrange to listen/see things in the collection.
