1937 Blues singer Bessie Smith dies as a result of being refused treatment at a "whites-only" hospital for injuries suffered in a car accident near Coahoma, Mississippi. Revisionists say the treatment part of the story may be false.
1941 Original Youngbloods drummer Joe Bauer born in Memphis, Tennessee. Their best known hit was "Get Together".
