1936 Red headed and long legged dancer and singer and Elvis playpal (in German bars only) Juliet Prowse born.
1939 Joseph Jesse Russell of the Persuasions born in Henderson, North Carolina.
1943 Keyboardist John Locke of Spirit, later Nazareth, born in Los Angeles.
1943 Guitarist Owen "Onnie" McIntyre of the Average White Band born in Lennoxtown, Scotland.

1954 Elvis Presley plays his first (and only) show at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, where he bombs.
1955 Steve Severin (aka Steven Bailey) of Siouxsie and the Banshees is born.
1965 The Beatles' cartoon series debuts on ABC TV. It would run for four years, and although it did feature genuine Beatles songs, the cartoon characters' voices were not the Fab Four's.
1969 Will Smith born in Philadelphia. Best known these days as a comedy-action film star in two of the largest grossing films in history, ("Independence Day", "Men In Black"), he began as a good time rapper The Fresh Prince with partner DJ Jazzy Jeff, then moved to a TV sit-com, "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" before his film work.
1970 First episode of The Partridge Family TV show aired on ABC. Starring David Cassidy, Susan Dey and David's real life step mom as his Mom, the plot is about a familybubblegum band that tools around in a psychadelic bus. The next day David's single, "I Think I Love You", makes the Cashbox charts (Billboard on 10/10) and goes on to be the biggest selling record of the year, selling nearly 5 million worldwide. At least 15 tie-in LPs released.
1975 Bluegrass performer and Bill's brother, Charlie Monroe, dies at 72 of cancer.
1976 Wings perform a benefit concert in St. Mark's Square, Venice to pay for repair to water damage to the art treasures there. During the show the 30,000 fans in attendance loosened paving stones and water flooded into the square.
1980 Led Zeppelin drummer, John Bonham, dies of asphyxiation at the home of Jimmy Page. Autopsy reveals he consumed at least 40 shots of vodka.
1981 The Rolling Stones begin a US tour at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. The tour would be the first sponsored by a consumer product, in this case Jovan perfume.
