1920   The world changes now and forever as KDKA begins the era of regular radio broadcasting out of Pittsburgh, PA.
1937   R&B / nascent rock singer Earl "Speedy / Speedoo" Carroll born. Earl sang lead in the vocal group the Carnations ('53), the Cadillacs (prob. the first line dancin' vocal group), and the (past prime) Coasters.
1938   David "Jay" Black born. Black was one of at least two "Jay's" fronting Jay and the Americans when he replaced John "Jay" Traynor in '62.
1941   Bruce Welsh, a founding guitarist of Cliff Richard's backing band the Drifters, who became the instrumental Shadows, born in the UK.
1944   Stunt keyboardist (once punched the plastic ivories with a knife blade) Keith Emerson, born. Keith played with Gary Farr & The T-Bones, The Nice (67 - 70), filled stadiums with Emerson, Lake & Palmer (70 - 78), did a lot of soundtrack work and performed briefly as a part of Group 3 (88).
1945   John David Souther, guitarist singer songwriter with a long Glen Frey association (in an early band together Longbranch Pennywhistle, as well as penning many Eagles songs) and tri-founder of the Souther, Hillman, Furay Band, born.
1946   Tremeloes bassist Les "Chip" Hawkes born.
1947   Brit folk revivalist Dave Pegg, who performed on bass with Steeleye Span, Fairport Convention and "heavy metal" band Jethro Tull, born.
1961   Country artist, vocalist and vocal gay rights activist, K.D. Lang born
1963   Dion takes the high road when he walks off the set of UK TV show, "Ready, Steady, Go", complaining that the go-go girls were inappropriate.
1966   Blues musician Mississippi John Hurt (73) dies from a heart attack in the State that named him.
1971   Ashley Bates of UK band Chapterhouse born.
1979   Mods and Rockers rumble on screen as the Who's "Quadophenia", with an enigmatic Sting in a staring role, hits the big screen.

1986   Socialist songwriter Billy Bragg arrested in Norfolk, England for cutting an opening in the fence of a US Air Force base.
1990   The Purple One's fourth film, "Grafiti Bridge" opens.
1997   Disney does the multi-culti version of Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Cinderella", the duos only made for TV musical. This update of the real time 1957 charmer starring a very young Julie Andrews features a equally young Brandy, Eddie Adams' fairy godmother role going to Whitney Houston. Despite the divas, the production reeks of studio technique, favoring gloss over theater magic only possible from a live broadcast.
