1944   Mike Bernie, tenorman for Wizzard, born in the UK.
1945   Rick Grech, session stalwart and bass player in the rock groups Family, Blind Faith, KGB, Ginger Baker's Airforce and Traffic, born in Bordeaux, France.
1946   Beast and Sugarloaf guitarist Robert Yeazel born.
1950   Dan Peek, who wrote songs, played guitar and sang with the group America, born.
1951   Born today and best known for his sax work with Kool & the Gang, Ronald Bell.
1954   Chris Morris, who played guitar with Paper Lace, born.

1963   The Rolling Stones chart for the first time in the UK with "I Wanna Be Your Man/Stoned". The song was written for the Stones by John Lennon & Paul McCartney. Also released today "I'll Keep You Satisfied," penned by John & Paul for Billy J. Kramer & the Dakotas.

1964   Dave Clark Five first appear on Ed Sullivan Show. Ed sez they are as good as the Rolling Stones, but "nice neat boys."
1966   Elvis Presley has 3 LPs certified gold on this day: "Elvis Presley" and "Elvis' Golden Records Vols. 2 & 3."
1967   Rolling Stone Magazine is born. RS is the first national Rock Magazine in America.
1968   George Harrison releases the LP "Wonderwall Music," the first solo record by a Beatle. This film soundtrack LP was released on Apple.

O. C. Smith is awarded his first & only Gold record for "Little Green Apples." This former Count Basie vocalist also won two Grammies this year.

1969   The Beatles release their final LP, Abbey Road. Also today the New York Times publishes a story on the "Paul is Dead" rumor!

It's official, the endless "Summer of Love" and the "Sixties" are OVER. The Rolling Stones hold a free concert at the Altamont Speedway in California. The event is marred by the murder of Meredith Hunter by Hells Angels hired as security. The entire event was captured in the film "Gimme Shelter."

1971   The Allman Brothers play three songs at funeral of band member Duane Allman.
1973   UK group "Salvation" play their first live show at the Glasgow Apollo. Group later becomes "Slik." Features guitarist Midge Ure (later Rich Kids, Ultravox) and drummer Kenny Hyslop (later Skids, Simple Minds).
1977   Sex Pistols first LP "Never Mind The Bollocks" is released in the UK (three days after US release).

Martin Scorsese's "The Last Waltz" chronicling the Band's farewell concert premiers in New York City.

1979   Bob Dylan launches his "Slow Train Coming" tour at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco. Born again Bob is booed.
1980   Waylon Jennings version of the TV theme "The Dukes of Hazzard" hits #1 on the country charts.
1982   An audiophile version of Sergeant Pepper is released by Mobile Fidelity. The record, in UHQR half speed is pressed in an edition of 5,000, costs $50, and sells out in two weeks.
1985   Ex-Clash band member Mick Jones releases BAD's first LP "This is Big Audio Dynamite."

Chris Farlowe (John Henry Deighton) of the Thunderbirds and Atomic Rooster begins 30-day jail sentence in the UK for tax evasion.

Former boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter's twenty year old murder conviction is overturned by a Newark court. He had been the subject of a Bob Dylan song and two benefit concerts organized by Dylan, who believed that the boxer had been wrongly convicted.

1986   Bassist Tracey Pew, formerly with Birthday Party and Nick Cave, died in Melbourne, Australia, during an epileptic fit. He was 28.
