| 1942 | | "The Queen of Soul," Miss Aretha Franklin, born in Memphis, TN. Raised in the gospel tradition by her father, the minister and singer Rev. C.L. Franklin, Aretha grew up in Detroit where she sang at his New Bethel Baptist Church.
After her initial recordings for JVB/Battle (1956), was signed to CBS by John Hammond (1960) where he unsuccessfully tried to turn her into a pop singer. Luckily the Atlantic Records crew (Jerry Wexler, Arif Mardin, Tom Dowd, 1966) knew what to do with her talent, recording her finest work at Muscle Scholes in Alabama. The winner of many Grammy's, she was the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1987). |

| 1989 | | Chuck Berry's recording studio on his farm in Wentzville, Missouri burns to the ground. Among the losses is a master tape of 13 songs Berry recorded during the last 7 years. Arson is ruled out. |
