1943 Yardbirds and Renaissance founder Keith Relf born in Surrey, UK.
1944 Jeremy Clyde, half of the pop duo Chad and Jeremy born.
1951 Vocalist Russell Thompkins, Jr., best known for his work with the Stylistics, born in Philadelphia, PA.
1954 Wally Stocker, guitarist with pop pretty-boy band the Babys, born in London.
1955 Blackboard Jungle premieres. This film heralds the 'teen era' as it features the first rock song ever to pulse behind the credits, "Rock Around the Clock," by Bill Haley and the Comets.
1961 The Beatles make their first appearance at the Liverpool nightspot, the Cavern Club.
1969 John and Yoko begin their bed-in for peace campaign at the Amsterdam Hilton.
1971 Jamaican jazz and ska saxophonist Don Drummond dies in the Kingston Bellevue Mental Asylum where he had been committed after murdering his common law wife. Drummond is best known for his work with the Skatellites.
1976 Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, the subject of a Bob Dylan song and two concerts organized in support of the jailed boxer, is released from prison.

New York's Finest bust David Bowie and Iggy Pop for drug possession. The charges were later dropped.

1985 Johann Sebastian Bach born.
1991 88 year old Leo Fender dies in CA. One of the electric guitar pioneers, Leo started mass producing solid body electric guitars in the late 40s. Telecaster and Stratocaster are Fender trademarks.
1995 Bill Berry released from the hospital in Switzerland. Bill, the drummer for R.E.M. had left the stage during a concert with a massive headache, a few days later had brain surgery.
1997 90 year old songwriter Fred Spielman (Fritz Spielmann) dies in New York City. His career spanning over 60 years, Fred churned 900 plus compositions for the likes of Crosby, Sinatra, and in the 70s the Grammy nominated, "Paper Roses", for Marie Osmond.
