1942 Singer/songwriter (a modern day "Mr. Bojangles") Jerry Jeff Walker born in Oneonta, New York.
1954 Nancy Wilson, who with sister Ann fronted the rock band Heart, born in San Francisco.
1964 Pioneering DJ Alan Freed, his career already ruined by the payola scandal, is charged with income tax evasion.
1970 Singer Tammi Terell dies of a brain tumor at the age of 24. Terell was the singing partner of Marvin Gaye, and in her last appearance, she collapsed in his arms while performing.
1974 The Grand Ole Opry House at the Opryland entertainment complex becomes the new site for the Grand Ole Opry. A nicer back stage in the new theater appeals to the artists, even though Opryland lacks the down-home atmosphere of the old Ryman building.
1975 Blues and pioneer electric guitarist T. Bone Walker dies at the age of 64.
1976 Arthur "Hardrock" Gunter, known for the original version of Elvis Presley's hit "Baby Let's Play House", dies.
1978 At a Holiday Inn in Columbus, Ohio, Elvis Costello, drunk, angry and arguing with a member of Steven Still's band, refers to Ray Charles as a "blind, ignorant nigger." Elvis later apologizes at a press conference in New York.
1981 At an LA U2 concert only a dozen or so fans attend a mistakenly unadvertised second night concert. Hey, sounds like the K-mart tour.
1983 Hell's Angel's hold a press conference in NYC to publicly deny allegations that they had been plotting to kill Mick Jagger since Altamont.
1990 Mother Love Bone's Andrew Wood OD's on smack in Seattle. He dies 3 days later.
