| 1912 | | Bluesman Sam 'Lightnin' Hopkins born in Centerville, Texas. Hopkins went from street performances to Carnegie Hall concerts (1960, 1979). Along the way he recorded for Alladin (1946) and 20+ other labels in his nearly 60 year career. |

| 1944 | | Funkmaster Sly Stone (Sylvester Stewart) born in Denton, TX. Born a musician Sly sang Gospel when he was four, about the same time he started learning to play a variety of instruments. In San Francisco in the 50s he DJd, attended music school and formed his first bands. Best known outfit was The Family Stone (67), that was inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (93) and gave us the organ driven classic, "Dance to the Music." Sly also produced a variety of 60s bands from the Beau Brummels to the Great Society. |
