1924   Earl Scruggs born in North Carolina.
1929   Wilbert Harrison, who had a hit with "Kansas City" in 1959, is born.
1935   Nino Temple born in Niagara Falls, NY. Along with his sister April Stevens he recorded "Deep Purple" that went to #1 in Nov., 1963. Actor Nino was in the Glenn Miller Story and he's the guy flailing the floor on sax in the opening scene of "The Girl Can't Help It".
1937   Doris Troy is born.
1944   Van "Do the Hustle" McCoy is born.
1946   Syd (Roger) Barrett, founder of Pink Floyd born in Cambridge.
1947   British folk legend Sandy Denny (Alexandra Elene Maclean Denny) who would play with Fairport Convention and others, is born.
1951   Fabulous Thunderbird Kim Wilson is born.
1953   Guitar player Malcolm Young of AC/DC is born.
1957   In New York City the do-nothing King of American TV, Ed Sullivan, presents the real King for the last time on his show. Performing for over 20 minutes, Elvis sings, "Hound Dog," "Don't Be Cruel," "Love Me Tender," "Heartbreak Hotel," "Peace in the Valley", "Too Much" (his latest single) and "When My Blue Moon Turns to Gold Again."
1959   Kathy Sledge of Sister Sledge is born.
1964   The Rolling Stones first UK tour, a shared billing with the Ronettes titled, "Group Scene 64", begins at the Granada in Harrow, UK.

Mark O'Toole of the UK pop group, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, born.

1968   The primetime TV show "Happening 68" debuts on American TV. Brainchild of teen exploitation guru Dick Clark, the show runs about a year.

The "Flying V" electric guitar is patented by Gibson Guitars. (day in dispute - may be the 7th?)

1971   For the first time since leaving home to become a rock star, Neil Young returns to Canada, at Vancouver's Queen Elizabeth Theater, to perform.
1975   Led Zep fans become a bit unruly while waiting for tickets to go on sale for a Feb. 4 concert at the Boston Garden. With an estimated $30,000 damage, the upcoming show is canceled by Mayor Kevin White.
1977   Unable to cope with the controversy, EMI sacks the Sex Pistols after only 3 months and releasing but one single. The band and manager Malcolm McLaren are given a £40,000 pay-out.
1980   Georgeanna Tillman Gordon, former singer with the Marvelettes dies at the age of 46 after a long struggle with sickle cell anemia.
1982   Lynval Golding of the Specials (later Funboy) is stabbed in the neck by skins in Coventry, England. Nearly dies as gash comes within an inch of his jugular.
1983   The Smiths get their first headliner at Manchester's Manhattan Sound Club in the UK. Gay go-go dancers sporting stilettos and maracas add a festive air.
1985   British Reggae artists get the jump on USA for Africa crowd when Desmond Dekker, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Smiley Culture and Dennis Brown perform an Ethiopian relief benefit concert at Brixton's Academy.
