1916   Voot voot! R&B's own non-sense-making songwriter Slim Gaillard is born.
1923   The Barn Dance radio show is born when fiddler M.J. Bonner saws square dance tunes for 90 minutes on WBAP in Fort Worth, Texas. The still active WBAP preceeded the Grand Old Opry show by nearly three years.
1936   Billboard Magazine publishes their first top 100 chart.
1937   John Gorman of Scaffold is born.
1942   Guitar avatar John McLaughlin (Mahavishnu Orchestra, Shakti) is born.
1944   Volker Homback, member of Tangerine Dream born in Kamenz, Germany.
1946   Arthur Conley, later to ask, "Do you like good music?", is born.
1953   Hank Williams is burried in Montgomery, Alabama as 20,000 mourners crowd the downtown area for a last look.
1954   Elvis Presley records his second acetate demo, one of those "make your own record" deals at Sun Studios' Memphis Recording Studio Service. Owner Sam Phillips is mildly impressed with the young man's versions of "Casual Love Affair" and "I'll Never Stand In Your Way", telling a secretary to write down his phone number. At the time, Elvis is a truck driver and odd job man eagerly awaiting his 19th birthday in four days .
1956   Electronic, New Order and Joy Division guitarist Bernard Sumner (later Albrecht) born in Lancashire, UK. DayRock/Tobler lists his name as Bernard Albrecht/Summer (Bernard Dicken).
1957   With encouraging words of, "cough" and "bend over", Army doctors at Kennedy Veterans' Hospital in Memphis give Elvis Presley his pre-induction physical.

Louisiana's Fats Domino records his signature song and future #1 on the Billboard R&B charts, "I'm Walkin' to New Orleans".

1958   Macel King (Sweet Sensation) is born.
1960   Michael Stipe of R.E.M born
1962   Martin McAloon of Prefab Sprout born.
1964   Ian Masters of the Pale Saints born.
1965   CBS buys the Fender Guitar Company for a reported $13 million.

David Glasper of Breathe is born.

1968   In Gothenburg, Sweden, the police arrest a drunken Jimi Hendrix in the process of destroying his hotel room.
1970   His Bentley limo attacked by skinheads outside of a Hatfield disco, non-driver Keith Moon panicks and accidentally runs over and kills his driver Neil Boland, who had gotten out of the car to clear the way.
1971   Completed nearly two years earlier, the feature film "Performance" starring Mick Jagger premieres in London.
1973   Readers of Rolling Stone learn that the newest Allman Brothers' bandmember will be bassist Lamar Williams, replacing the late Berry Oakley.
1976   Former Beatles bodyguard 40 year old Mal Evans is shot to death by Los Angeles police after finding him despondent, armed and threatening.
1978   Black Sabbath welcomes Ozzy Osbourne back for a short-lived reunion.

In Los Angeles, Peter Green, former Fleetwood Mac guitarist, marries Jane Samuel.

1979   Jazz legend Charles Mingus dies in Mexico at age 56 following struggle with Lou Gehrig's Disease (heart attack?). He was working on a Joni Mitchell project, some of which was released as Mingus.

The success of the Beatles spurs the re-opening of Hamburg's Star Club, scene of the band's musical maturation.

1986   Bassist, ex Grand Slam and ex-Thin Lizzy leader Phil Lynott dies of heart and liver failure (GuinnessDayxDay says brought on by drugs after being in a coma for a week) .
1989   Cocoanut Grove Nightclub in Los Angeles closes.
1991   Nirvana, a post punk Seatle band announces it's leaving local label Sub Pop and signing a two album deal with Geffen.
