1955   DJ and promoter Allen Freed holds his first "Rock 'n' Roll Ball" at the Saint Nicholas Arena in Harlem. Among the acts performing at the two sold out, 6,000 seat shows are Fats Domino, Big Joe Turner, the Clovers, the Moonglows, Drifters and the Harptones.
1956   Bob Bradbury of Hello is born.
1959   Carl Smith, aka Chas Smith, aka Cathal Smythe, dancer and compere (master of ceremony) for the UK ska-ish band Madness, born in Kent.

1967   First "Be-In" happens at the Polo Fields in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. Performing for the gathered Hippies: Greatful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Dizzy Gillespie!
1968   James Todd Smith (aka L.L. Cool J.) is born.

Enigmatic cineste D.A. Pennebaker premiers Monterey Pop, a film of the two year old festival, in LA.

1970   In London John Lennon exhibits a show of his erotic lithographs. Two days later the cops close the show.
1973   Paul Raven (Paul Gadd) locks up his recordings and press photos in a small safe (some sources say it was a coffin), sinks them in the Thames, and becomes Gary Glitter.

Chubby jumpsuit Elvis Presley broadcasts one of his most popular concerts, "Aloha From Hawaii," via satellite.

1977   From the Honolulu International Center, Elvis Presley performs live on TV, the show, "Elvis: Aloha From Hawaii", attracts the largest world-wide audience ever. (up to the time). In 1988, a double LP of the rehearsal for this show is released.
1984   NBC premiers short lived concert program Rock Palace.
1989   "Back In The U.S.S.R.", mostly an homage to early rock & roll by Paul McCartney is released in Russia. Bootleg and import copies crop up for as much as $1,000 in the States initially, but settle down to about 40 bucks rather quickly.
1995   At a "Voters for Choice" concert in Washington DC, Jack Irons of the Red Hot Chili Peppers formally debuts as Pearl jam's new drummer.
