1883   Pioneering ragtime composer, pianist and vaudevillian Eubie Blake born in Baltimore, Md.
1898   Dock Boggs, a coal miner who becomes one of America's best known banjo player and folk artist, Born in West Norton Virginia.
1933   Warren Smith, early rockabilly performer born in Louse, Mississippi.

1954 Grammy winning Jazz saxaphone great King Curtis (Curtis Ousley) born in Ft. Worth, TX. His long career began at 12 with the Lionel Hampton band in 1950, ended up playing on over 125 sessions, a main stay to Atlantic artists, especially Aretha Franklin. Died in '71 from a stabbing.
1959   Buddy Holly is buried in Lubbock. Among the pall bearers is Phil Everly. Gravestone reads "Holley", the correct spelling of his given surname and pictures a guitar.

Eddie "Guitar Slim" Jones dies of pneumonia in NYC at age 33.

1965   George Harrison has his tonsils removed (singing not improved).
1966   Premiere issue of Rock Magazine, "Crawdaddy," is published.
1967   Monkee Mickey Dolenz (George Michael Donenz Jr.) meets Beatle Paul McCartny in his St. John's Wood home.
1980   Pink Floyd begin their tour for their double LP "The Wall". The tour consisted of 7 nights in Los Angeles and 7 in New York City. At each show a 120x60 ft. polystyrene wall was gradually built across the stage during the performance and then demolished at the end. You had to be there, and on drugs, to appreciate.
1982   Kraftwerk the first German group to go #1 on the British pop singles chart with "Computer Love / The Model".
1985   British vocalist Matt Monro (Terry Parsons) dies at the age of 54. Best known for his Oscar nominated 1965 hit, "Born Free".
1987   The Smiths give their final performance at San Remo festival, Italy.
1990   Jimmy Van Heusen dies at 77 in Rancho Mirage, CA. Wrote the music for "Swingin' On A Star", "Call Me Irresponsible", "Love & Marriage" "My Kind of Town", and "High Hopes". Born Chester Babcock ( a name used by pal Bob Hope in one of the road pictures) in Syracuse NY, he took his name from the shirt co!
1995   Graham Crabb of Pop Will Eat Itself collapses of nervous exhaustion while the band is supporting Nine Inch Nails. Dates canceled for a while.
