1910   Spade Cooley, bandleader who would grow up to play some of the hottest country swing ever made and end his days in jail for murdering his wife, born in Grand, Oklahoma. Spade was a film double for singing cowboy Roy Rogers and was one of bandboys in the back room when Marlene Dietrich sang, "See What the Boys in the Backroom Will Have," in Destry Rides Again.
1938   Bobby Hendricks, early DooWooper with several groups, born.
1953   Graham Lewis of Wire and Gilbert/Lewis born.
1955   Ray Manzarek, keyboards,bass and founding member of the Doors, born.
1956   Elvis hits the charts for the first time with "Heartbreak Hotel".
1965   The Beatles begin filming their second feature film, "Help!", in the Bahamas.
1976   Ex-Supreme Florence Ballard dies at the age of 32 from a heart attack. She was destitute and living off welfare in Detroit, MI, at the time of her death.
1978   Sid Vicious and his girlfriend Nancy Spungen are busted for drugs at the Chelsea Hotel in NYC.

Before they even cut a record, the Police land a TV commercial for Wrigley's gum, all of them going blond for the appearance.

1979   Madness play their first gig under that name.
1981   Kermit Chandler, guitarist and songwriter with the 60's soul band, the Sheppards, dies after a long illness at the age of 38.
1987   Andy Warhol, artist and professional personality dies at the age of 58 in New York City.

Gary Numan closes his vanity label, Numa Records.
