1940   William "Smokey" Robinson born in Detroit. Smokey was a founder of the Matadors (mid-'50s) who became the Miracles, went solo in '72 - a Motown staple most of his life as singer, songwriter, arranger, and producer. Bob Dylan called him, "America's greatest living poet," was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ('87) and earned his Grammy's Living Legends Award (89).
1943   Lou Christie (Lugee Sacco) Born in Glen Willard, Pennsylvania.
1948   Tony Lommi of Black Sabbath born.
1956   Dave Wakeling of the English Beat and General Public, born.
1957   Germanic Disco-Classicist Falco born.
1960   Holly Johnson, frontman for the UK group, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, born in Khartoum, Sudan.
1972   Jazz trumpeter Lee Morgan is murdered in Slugs's, a New York City club.
1976   Rick Stevens, former lead singer with Tower of Power, is arrested (and eventually convicted) for the murders of three drug dealers in San Jose, CA.
1980   Lead Singer of Heavy Metal band AC/DC Bon Scott chokes to death following a night of heavy drinking. He was 34.
1981   Court rules that George Harrison plagiarized the Chiffons "He's So Fine" (written by Ronnie Mack) and turned it into "My Sweet Lord".
1983   Kris Kristofferson marries Lisa Meyers.
1983   Paul Weller announces his new band, the Style Council.
1991   While on tour in Mexico INXS has two grand stolen from their hotel room. Also on this tour roadie Garry (perfect name) Beers kidnapped by Mexican police and let go after paying about $120.
