1920 Jazz original Charlie "Bird" Parker born. His innovative take on jazz became known as be-bop and the sound revolutionized the music.
1924 Singer Dinah Washington (Ruth Lee Jones) born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Dinah began as a Gospel singer, performed with Lionel Hampton in the 40s, and as a solo artist had hits with "Baby Get Lost", "What A Difference A Day Makes" and "Soulville". One of my faves is, "TV Is the Thing This Year."
1958 Pop phenomena Michael Jackson is born in Gary, Indiana, the seventh of nine very talented children. Guitarist George Harrison joins the Quarrymen, a band featuring local musicians Paul McCartney and John Lennon, and performs at the opening of The Casbah Club in Heyman's Green, Liverpool. The club is owned by Quarryman drummer Pete Best's mom.
1966 The Beatles play their last live date ever at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.
1976 The Clash play their first public gig at the Screen On the Green in Islington, North London.
1997 Loud Records' worker Jessiah Styles accusses 4 members of the Wu-Tang Clan of assault following a concert at the New Worl Music Theater in Chicago. Police are still investigating.
