1960 Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra perform at the Fountainbleu Hotel in Miami for a TV special to be broadcast in May. Guests include Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Mitch Miller.
1966 David Bowie releases his first solo single, "Do Anything You Say" for Pye Records in the UK.
1983 Gloria Stevens, editor, writer and photographer for 16 magazine and the woman credited with discovering Jim Morrison, dies from cancer at the age of 51.
1984 During an argument, singer Marvin Gaye, 45, is shot dead by his father. He began his career in the late '50s as a doo wop singer in the group, the Marquees. Later, as a member of the Moonglows, he was spotted by Motown Record's founder Berry Gordy who signed him to his new label. His hits include a string with vocalist Tammi Terrell ("Ain't No Mountain High Enough"), "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", "What's Goin' On?", "Let's Get It On", and most recently, "Sexual Healing".
1988 Partners Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman borrow 20 Grand to launch Sub Pop Records. Six years later they sell 49% of the biz to Warners for 20 Mil.
