Music Books

Budding musicologists: This is our first version of a beginners' bookshelf, a listing (bibliography) of a core set of music books referencing a wide variety of musical styles. Although most of the research we do draws on primary materials (the recordings), we check a variety of these books every day at the ARChive.

The list is available two ways: alphabetically by book title, or by general area of interest (loosely encompassing genres / styles).
We're not tying to pigeonhole things, but these headings pretty
much represent the way we sort the books on the shelves to get
at them in a hurry.

Odds & Ends

For specific research, or the skinny on minor characters and important obscurata, we hope to one day expand this list another level. A baby-step in this direction is our posting of the winners of the Awards for Excellence. You can see the books that ARSC, The Association for Recorded Sound Collections, deemed the best researched volumes issued over the past seven years. You can visit ARSC at www.arsc-audio.org

For the time being, have a look at these recommendations. No one book will answer all your questions about a given subject, or is to be completely trusted. When we do fact checking, we try to offer two sources for the information, so again, notions of "the best reference" are pretty subjective. To be listed here means we look at the book a lot, ones we really like have 'fave' in the notes. And a book can be listed as the first best one to buy, maybe the only volume available on a subject, and still not be a 'fave'.

The books listed here are histories, general references (indexes, guides, encyclopedias), and discographies. We'll pass on biographies now and forever. Some books on out list are out-of-print (OP) - so scour those archaic bookstores while they're still a part of the landscape.

Here's what's on each line of this bibliography:

1. title
2. author
3. publisher, country published in (if not US), date published, ISBN #
4. binding (paperbound/hardbound), # of pages, illustrated, price (rounded/guess/used), out of print (OP)
5. notes. This line begins with a summary designation ('history', 'reference', 'discography' or 'prose'), then if 'fave' (a favorite, one we really like) , then brief notes on the book.

Hey, if you use an invaluable reference book we should know about, please contact us!

Publishers should also let us know about new tomes.
