Broadway, Film & TV
American Musical Theater
Gerald Bordman
Oxford University Press, 1992. ISBN#: 0-19-507242-1
hardbound, 832 pages, $65. Reference. Broadway and beyond, one of
the better all purpose references.
Broadway Musicals "Show by Show" Stanley Green Hal
Leonard Books, 1985. ISBN#: 0-88188-375-1 hardbound, 361 pages, $18.
Reference. Arranged by year, but a good index, literally "Show by
Show". Not complete, but a very good, well priced one volume reference,
with casts, song titles, pretty complete production credits, with a
brief show summery, and odd/essential bits of historic errata.
Movie Song Catalog Ruth Benjamin, Arthur
Rosenblatt McFarland, 1993. ISBN#: 0-89950-764-6 hardbound, 368
pages, $45. Reference. Fave. Subtitled, "Performers and Supporting
Crew for the Songs Sung in 1460 Musical and Nonmusical Films,
1928-1988". Lists the songs performed, performer and writers of the
composition for both American and British films, with good indexes. The
one we trust the most (and the authors used the ARC's collection of
soundtracks to unravel many mysteries!).
Television Theme Recordings Steve Gelfand Popular
Culture Ink, 1994. ISBN#: 1-56075-021-9 hardbound, 332 pages, B&W
illus., $75. OP. Reference. Very nice indeed, with 100s of
record covers to make you salivate. Subtitled, "An Illustrated
Discography, 1951-1994". ARSC winner. Only important missing info is
the name of singer/performer of the theme as performed on the actual TV
show - like Joe Cocker for The Wonder Years.
