ARSC Awards for Excellence
For the past four years the ARChive's director, B. George, has been part of the ARSC's (Association for Recorded Sound Collections) "Blue Ribbon" panel to recognize the "best new research into the history of recordings and recording artists". It is a struggle to identify worthy books (mini budget) in order to nominate them, and an even greater struggle (I mean pleasure) to give them a serious look. All of this has been above-the-call-of-duty managed by Tim Brooks. Please scan the list below for books worth adding to your library. About the ARSC Awards
The ARSC Award for Excellence in Historical Recorded Sound Research was established by the Association for Recorded Sound Collections in 1991 as a means of recognizing the best new research into the history of recordings and recording artists. The Award is intended to publicize the finest research in this field, and to encourage others to emulate its high standards.
To be eligible research must have been published, but it may deal with any artist, musical style, record label, recording technology or other subject in the general area of recording history. A maximum of two awards are presented annually in each subject category, for best history and best discography. In addition, a Lifetime Achievement Award is presented each year to an individual in recognition of his or her life's work of published research about the history of recording or recording artists.
A list of finalists is announced early each year, from among works published during the previous calendar year. Winners are announced at the ARSC Annual Conference. Finalists and winners are chosen by a Blue Ribbon Committee consisting of five elected judges with recognized expertise in specific fields, the President of ARSC, and the editor of the ARSC Journal.
